Why was my organization chosen to participate in the Stroudsburg Area Map Room Project?

Why should my organization participate in the Stroudsburg Area Map Room Project?

There are many benefits to participating in this Design for Good project. The mapping process itself is a team building experience, where you can collaboratively construct a shared vision. The generation of numerous maps will provide multiple perspectives that can promote understanding and build tolerance. And, it’s FUN!

What is Design for Good?


Design for Good is a national design movement that focuses on using all forms of design and design thinking to better someone’s life. Design for Good is a method of utilizing problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and collaboration towards social change. Design for Good includes the following strategic initiatives: (1) Design for Democracy, (2) Diversity and Inclusion, (3) Women Lead, and (4) Design for Communities. All data collected from this project will be used to initiate a larger, Design for Good project that will benefit the entire community.

How long will this take?

Part 1: Pre-planning.Your group will make decisions about the intention and look of your map.
Part 2: Map-Making. Schedule your first session in one of our two map rooms. Sessions inside the map room will typically last 3-hours. We will customize your visit to your availability. If you need a shorter session, longer session, more sessions, etc., we will help make it happen.
Part 3: Visit the traveling map exhibition in one of its locales in late 2019. We cannot wait for this!

Do I need to bring my own materials?

No. East Stroudsburg University will provide all map creation materials, though you are welcome to bring your own additional supplies, resource, or references. Please check out the list of supplies here.

Do I need to be an artist?

Absolutely not. Everyone is welcome. Your organization has the freedom to create your map however you wish.

What if my organization does not wish to participate?

If this is the case, we will be sad. But, please do consider participation for it can benefit everyone, and your organization has been specifically chosen because your organization’s voice will add a much needed perspective to this project.

What should my map look like?

It does not need to look like the maps you are accustomed to.

Ways to be comfortable:

When visiting the Map Room, please dress in clothes that are comfortable and clothes that may get art-making materials on them. Depending upon the seasons, our Map Rooms tend to change temperature, so please bring clothes to keep warm and/or stay cool. Bathrooms and water fountains are readily available. Bring a water bottle. Unfortunately, no food or snacks will be provided, but, you are welcome to bring your own food.
